What is lead paint stabilization?
Lead paint stabilization is a method for interim control. Unlike lead paint removal, stabilization is meant to temporarily reduce exposure to hazards. Common methods of stabilization include: Repairing physical defects that cause paint deterioration, removing loose paint and other material from surfaces containing lead paint, applying new paint or protective coatings. Stabilization may be favored over permanent removal when the lead paint-containing surfaces are intact and the building is structurally sound. Stabilization is also commonly used when permanent removal is not financially possible.
What are the dangers of lead exposure?
Children younger than 6 years old are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. Lead exposure can affect practically every system in the human body and can include abdominal and joint pain, gastrointestinal upset, and learning and many developmental disabilities.
If your home was built before 1978, there is a good chance it may have lead-based paint somewhere on the premises. In 1978, the federal government banned consumer uses of lead-containing paint. Lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.
